Helen Elizabeth (Shetler) Reeder Timeline

 

Timeline:

 

~1915                          Milton and Ada Shetler buy farm 3 miles east of Cheraw, CO

1921                            Milton and Ada rent out the farm and move to Scottdale, PA

Milton works on Mennonite Publishing House

1922                            Milton and Ada move to Colorado Springs, Milton works for the school board

14 August 1923          Helen Elizabeth Shetler born, Colorado Springs, CO

Winter 1923-1924       Helen has scarlet fever

Jan. 1925                     Family moves back to family farm near Cheraw

May 1928                    Family purchases used 1926 Buick open touring car

July 1928                    Train trip w/Ada & brothers Eldon and Floyd to Hubbard, OR to visit Ada’s sister

August 1929               Great Depression begins

April 1930                  Living in Otero County, CO, w/parents & 6 siblings & Ada’s sister (US Census)

Spring 1930                Family trades farm near Cheraw, CO for house on ten acres in Hesston, KS

Jan. 1931                    Family moves to Hesston, KS with pony riding on running board of car

Summer 1932             Spends summer in Garden City, Missouri w/ Miller grandparents and Aunt Allie

1933/34                      Dust Bowl begins

1934                            Aunt Allie gets married, moves out of Milton and Ada’s home

~1935                          Milton teaches Helen to drive

~1936                           Family purchases a baler and a 1933 Ford truck, Milton starts straw business

Spring 1937                 Helen finishes 8th grade

Summ ‘37-Summ ‘38  Helen takes year off of school to work to help support her family

Fall 1938-Spring 1939  Helen resumes school and completes 9th grade

May 1939                      Milton leaves the family

Summ ‘39-Summ ‘40    Helen leaves school again, works as live-in maid for judge’s family

Sep. 1939                        World War II begins

April 1940                       Living in Hesston, KS, with mother and 9 siblings (US Census)

Fall 1940                         Helen resumes school, works in the school office

~1941                              Ada sells the farm and family moves to adjoining, smaller house

December 1941               US enters World War II

1942                                Charles and Juanita Reeder attend school in Hesston, KS

                                        Charles leaves school halfway through the year after being drafted

~1942                              Charles registers as conscientious objector

Oct. 18, 1942                   Helen’s story “Who Told The Truth” was published in “Words of Cheer”

Spring 1943                     Helen graduates high school

Summer 1943                  Helen moves to Idaho to work for the summer

    She lives with her cousin and Juanita Reeder

July 6, 1944                     Marriage to Charles William Reeder in Filer, Idaho

1945                                 Ada and Helen’s younger siblings move to Filer, Idaho

Jan. 16, 1945                    First child, Raymond Charles, is born

Feb. 6, 1945                     Charles assigned to Glacier National Park, Montana

Sep. 2, 1945                     End of World War II

June 8, 1946                     Second child, Ronald Gene, is born

1946                                  Charles transferred to Veteran’s Mental Hospital, Roseburg, Oregon

Aug. 21, 1946                   Charles released from wartime duties

1947                                  Charles goes to work for farmer Charles Zach in Filer, Idaho

Sep. 26, 1948                    Third child, Doris Elaine, is born

1953                                  Charles obtains his own farm in Kimberly, Idaho

July 8, 1953                      Fourth child, Harold Arlan, is born

August 20, 1954               Fifth child, Merlin Royce, is born

March 26, 1958                Sixth child, Wanda Coleen, is born

January 1960                    Family moves to Mountlake Terrace, WA, kids go to King’s Garden School

                                          Charles works for Ostrom’s Mushroom and then a furniture factory

~1960-1970                      Helen works as bookkeeper for King’s Garden School

1970                                 First (of 21) grandchildren born

1978                                 Charles starts his own business, Chuck’s Appliance Services

1984                                Helen and Charles move to house in Bothell

Nov. 25, 1987                   Helen publishes a story in “The Enterprise—Once Upon A Memory”

1997                                First (of 31) great-grandchildren born

August 2003                     Helen and Charles move to Marysville, WA

March 17, 2015               Charles’s death

August 29, 2020              Helen’s death
